The Rowan women’s lacrosse team has finally snapped their four-game losing streak after a 19-9 blowout victory over the Kean University Cougars on a sunny, yet windy Saturday in Glassboro. The win moves their record to 4-9 and gives them their first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) win of the year.

It was an all-around dominant game from the Profs. Both Molly Green and Elaina Corson scored five goals each, with Calista Burke not too far behind, with four goals herself.

“I think me and the rest of my team were just looking to come out with a strong start,” Corson said.

Rowan definitely came out of the gates firing, with Burke racking up a hat-trick in the first quarter, which set the tone for the Profs throughout the game. By halftime, the score was 12-5 in favor of Rowan.

Throughout the season, head coach Lindsay Delaney’s team had been struggling when it came to the third quarter. That wasn’t the case today. In the third quarter alone, the Profs notched six goals to the Cougars’ one.

“They didn’t need to be told anything at halftime,” Delaney said. “They just needed to continue what they were doing in the first and second quarter[s]. I do remember a point where they (Kean) scored three goals, and I was like ‘Oh, here it goes.’ There was definitely a thought in my mind ‘Is this it?’ Is this what they’re going to do again? Or are they going to be able to push through?’”

While the third quarter was the period that put the game away for the Profs, they also had an injury scare with senior captain Sophia Schiavo.

According to Delaney, Schiavo got hit in the draw circle and no call was made. By the middle of the fourth quarter, she was able to come back into the game, but with a brace on her left knee.

After the win, you could tell that the team’s spirits were high. Delaney looked to be happier than a kid in a candy store, the atmosphere at the stadium looked and felt more vibrant, and the younger kids who came to the game were happy to see the home team win.

When asked about how it felt to win after a four-game skid, Delaney cracked a joke to emphasize her excitement for the win.

“Is it only four games?” Delaney asked jokingly. “Because I feel like it’s nine. I feel like it’s great. It was earned. They earned it. Our strength of schedule is one of the best in the region for a reason.”

With this being the Profs’ first conference matchup of the season, the young team feels as though it’s a new season. They came into this game with no thought in their mind about the losing streak or anything of the sort. They were focused on winning.

NJAC play will continue for coach Delaney’s squad as they prepare to take on the Stockton University Ospreys in Glassboro on Wednesday, April 17, at 4 p.m.
