These boobs are made for walking

Breasts are extremely important, and that’s why students will be walking this Saturday to raise money for the health of mammary glands everywhere.

“These Boobs are made for Walking,” an eccentric campus-based breast cancer charity, will have its first walk on March 27. The event will start at 7 a.m. at Rowan’s intramural field with a light breakfast and speeches made by breast cancer survivors. At 8:30 a.m., they will begin a four-mile walk to empower and support breast cancer victims.

“We have been working on this for over 9 months and we hope it becomes very successful,” said Amanda Cucinotti, Rowan grad student and representative of the group.

The event was originally conceived from a series of annual “Lunch and Learns” that supported breast cancer awareness and a major fund raising event hosted by Lourdes Hospital.

After the funding for the program was cut, the Susan G. Komen foundation stepped in to help start another event.

“As for the name, we were looking for something very catchy so people can remember it. Lourdes had cut our program for the ‘Lunch and Learns,’ so this seemed like the best option.” Cucinotti said.

According to a 2009 study from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, 1 in 8 women have a lifetime risk of getting breast cancer, and 1 in every 35 women who get it will die from it. Breast cancer is 100 times more likely to occur in women than men, but the fatality rate is equal.

In 2004, breast cancer was the cause of over half a million deaths. Great strides have been made in the treatment, but the leading cause in deaths are the tumors and lumps that go undetected.

The new program has been incredibly popular among students, especially its name, which is based off of the hit song “These Boots are Made for Walking” by Nancy Sinatra.

Local businesses are sponsoring the event. Restaurants and shops from the Glassboro area like Checkers, Parties & More, Shoprite, Shop N’ Save, Nick’s Pizzeria and Steak House have given what they can in support of the event.

Students are ready to attend the walk with dozens of students RSVPing for the walk on the group’s Facebook event.

“I’m pretty big into community service events and I like it when big groups of students get together for something like this,” said Jessica Collins, a senior political science major. “People outside think college kids are all about partying and drinking, but it’s really good when we can come together and support a common goal like breast cancer.”

Registration prior to the walk is $25 and registration the day of is $30. All donations and registrations can be made at the Student Recreational Center.
