SGA announces new GPA requirements and fills open positions

Students looking to join the Student Government Association may now have more competition, as the SGA is looking to lower their minimum GPA requirement to meet the campus average.

The result will include that the SGA establish a consistent minimum GPA requirement of 2.75 for all executive board members and 2.5 for all senators.

“The all-campus average changes and it makes it difficult for anyone applying for the SGA candidates to know what their average is,” said SGA President Elizabeth Palmer. “Our constitution also has all different averages for the executive board members and this process will make it easier for everyone.”

The proposition will be voted on at the next Senate meeting on March 8.

At Monday’s SGA meeting, the internal reconstruction bill of the SGA executive board was voted on and approved.

“This is huge for us as a Student Government Association and the student body. We are not just a student council anymore,” Palmer said.

The efforts to restructure include removing the position of class president and creating assistant vice president positions in its place.

“The entire SGA Executive Board has put in a tremendous amount of time, energy and effort into all of the internal restructuring initiatives that the Senate has passed this year,” Palmer said. “The most recent restructuring provides a desperately needed upgrade in the duties, responsibilities and legitimacy of executive board positions.

“Most importantly this restructuring will better serve the students of Rowan as the individuals in these positions will have direct contact with every area of the University.”

Along with announcing open Board of Trustees and Camden liaison positions, Monday’s meeting filled two new positions to help with the election season.

After a number of campaign mishaps during the spring of 2009, the SGA elected an election commissioner to oversee the campaign and voting process.

The SGA announced on Monday the sole candidate for the position was Noah Weinstein. For the office of vice commissioner, Lauren Gravel was the only candidate. Both were voted into position.

“I ran for the position of Election Commissioner because I wanted to help SGA run its elections smoother than they were in years past,” said Weinstein, a junior American studies major. “I have been in SGA since my freshman year so I know how their elections are run. I hope the election process will improve in years to come.”
