John Mayer vs. Oprah

Can someone please tell me when Oprah became the queen of the universe, because I never voted on that and I don’t really approve. For those of who have not heard, Oprah is refusing to have John Mayer on her show to apologize for the comments that he made in an interview with Playboy magazine that many people have considered to be racist and sexist.

Why does this matter so much? Because apparently the American public is unable to forgive you now unless you are sitting on Oprah’s couch. Am I the only one who is annoyed by this? Why is it that we put so much weight in what this woman says and tells us?

I feel like there has to be other people out there that feel like this. However, you very rarely see anyone going against Oprah. Anyone who puts herself on the cover of every issue of her own magazine is someone who I have a bit of a problem with.

The person I do not have an issue with is Mayer. While I will admit the comments that he made may not have been the smartest thing to say, the fact is that he already has apologized for it. So why are we still giving him so much crap?

Also, can someone please tell me why we care so much about what Mayer says? I mean, I’ll admit that I do enjoy his music, and I find his tweets entertaining, but for the most part, he is kind of a jerk. He is like someone that you love to watch because you want to see what dumb thing he is going to do next. He is like a car accident; you don’t really want to pay attention to it, but you can’t really look away.

People are up in arms over the fact that Mayer made some somewhat sexist and without a doubt racist remarks. Some people talk about how “black people love him,” but how he would not sleep with a black woman, and going so far as to use the n-word.

No one seems to care that when discussing the night that he kissed Perez Hilton at a club to try to “out-gay” Hilton (which by the way, I don’t know if even Liberace could do), he described it as “… almost as if I hated fags.” There does not seem to be nearly as much outrage over this comment as his others, except of course from Hilton himself, who I personally find revolting. Hilton has since started a campaign to out Mayer, claiming that the two of them spent the night together last October.

Whether this drama will effect Mayer’s music career is unclear. Personally, I doubt it. I think that he has the power to overcome Oprah and Hilton, the two biggest queens of entertainment.
