What’s bugging me about sports this week? Nothing.

I’ve spent the past 12 weeks complaining about everything I hate about sports. I talked about players who were annoying me, stadium prices and gender tests on a South African runner.

From those 12 posts, you’d think I hate sports, but the truth is that I love them so much I expect better from them.

So in order to clear up the confusion, I figured in the spirit of the holiday season I would spend the last issue of the semester talking about something I love about sports.

Last week, Kennesaw State University announced plans to build a new soccer stadium for its women’s soccer team. The stadium will cost roughly $16.5 million and should hold around 8,300 fans. The KSU women’s team will be sharing the stadium with the Atlanta Beat, an expansion team playing its first game for the Women’s Professional Soccer league (WPS) in summer 2010.

In creating this partnership, Georgia will have the first ever women’s soccer specific stadium, something I and thousands of other women’s soccer fans probably never imagined would happen.

It’s going to be interesting to see how the stadium develops and how well the Beat does in their first season. The stadium could be used for all-star games, World Cup matches and even exhibition matches for the women’s national team. Hopefully, the stadium can become a world-class venue and can fuel the resurgence of women’s soccer.

If that occurs, I’ll continue writing about the good things that happen in sports every week. If not? Then insert joke about Tiger Woods here.
