CAP Center experiences influx of students during the recession

Located in Savitz Hall, The Career and Academic Planning Center (CAP) is the home to many job-hunting services. The recession is contributing to the 10 percent unemployment rate in the state, and current and former students are looking to the CAP Center for guidance.

“The office has experienced an increase in the number of appointments with alumni seeking employment and career advising,” said Ruben Britt, Assistant Director of the CAP Center. “Many of them are seeking information on how to reinvent and market themselves to an employer.”

The center provides students with advisers who discuss finding interests, choosing majors, starting jobs, writing resumes and preparing for an interview. The center also provides career counseling to students and alumni, as well as academic advising for undeclared students.

“The mission of the Center is to engage students in the development and implementation of meaningful educational and career goals consistent with their personal values, interests and abilities,” Britt said.

The Rohrer College of Business works with the CAP Center to put on career fairs as well as send their students to improve resume skills.

“Some of our smart job seekers have two things in common: they use the CAP Center services in conjunction with career advice,” said Niranjan Pati, Dean of the Rohrer College of Business. “The college has also worked with the CAP Center to create documents that are intended to motivate students, to seek gainful employment and internship opportunities, as well as to build strong resumes.

With a recession sweeping across the nation, the CAP Center’s influx of students has tested their resources.

“We have been able to provide information resources related to the career development, conducting a job search, resume development and interviewing techniques with anyone who comes in,” Britt said.
