No huge win hangover for the Profs

Perhaps Rowan University’s football team took my words a bit literally last week.

Whether or not head coach Jay Accorsi and his players read my piece in last week’s edition of “The Whit,” which explained why running up the score is completely acceptable in the world of sports, nobody expected the Profs to follow their overwhelming 72-14 victory over Western Connecticut State with a brilliant 67-0 shutout of Morrisville State College.

The win this week makes it apparent that Rowan’s football team is a force to be reckoned with.  If the Profs’ dominance continues, there is no question that they will be among Division III football’s elite by the end of the season.

With the win, the Profs improve to 5-1 overall, and 4-1 within the NJAC.  They now find themselves behind only Kean and Montclair State in the conference rankings. They will face both teams within the next three weeks.

This Saturday, however, they face the lowly Buffalo State Bengals.  Lead by sophomore quarterback Kenny Murphy, the Bengals have failed to score 14 points in four of their six games.  The Profs have attained at least two touchdowns in each of their contests, including their ten-point loss to SUNY Cortland, in which they took the field without starting play-caller Frank Wilczynski.

In addition to their inability to score, the Bengals are giving up an astounding average of 39 points per game.  It’s hard to imagine such a lackluster defense containing the dynamic offense of the Profs.

As easy as it may be for the Profs to look past the Bengals, they must not take any game lightly.  For as swiftly as their 67 points came this past Saturday, they could just as easily give up free points.  If they can find a way to make quick work out of Buffalo State this weekend, the real competition will be within reach.

Though these blowouts may be fun to watch, the real satisfaction for Rowan University students and fans will come on the colder weekend afternoons, when the Profs go toe-to-toe with teams who will be in the post-season picture.

So enjoy the games at hand while you can, but know that the best is yet to come.

Kickoff is Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and at halftime, former coach Richard Wackar will be honored with a ceremony that christens Rowan’s stadium in his name.
