Whats bugging me about sports this week – Herschel Walker
When I was in second or third grade, I had a life-size Herschel Walker poster on my door. I’m not sure why, but I think it was given to me by a friend who knew my love for the Dallas Cowboys. I kept him taped up there until long after Walker retired from the NFL. Walker was never a favorite of mine, but once a Cowboy, he is forever in my heart; I’m loyal that way.
So when I found out that Walker, at the age of 47, has signed a contract to fight with Strikeforce, a mixed martial arts organization, I was a little disappointed.
Walker is a Heisman Trophy winner, who at the end of his 12 season NFL career, was ranked second all-time in combined total yards. By signing up for a MMA fight, Walker can’t win. He spent an entire career getting beat down by linebackers and putting a harsh toll on his body. How, at 47, is Walker going to be able to perform in a MMA fight?
He is just another example of an athlete who retires and then regrets life away from athletics. I wish Walker would just coach, train or even commentate. But instead, he is going to train harder then he has ever trained before to do something that could tarnish his reputation as one of college football’s greatest running backs.
I wish him well whenever his fight is, but I won’t be watching. I want to think of Herschel in a good way, as the poster on my bedroom door.
