Italian Casual-Clothing Retailer Benetton Preps for Winter

Perhaps best known for their controversial “United Colors” advertising campaign, Italian casual-clothing retailer Benetton has prepared a new uniform for winter. The chosen pieces include versatile sweatshirts and jeans.

The innovative, provocative imagery has had slim exposure in the past year’s publications. Having been taken aback by the recent anonymity, I was excited about the upcoming season’s viewpoint, and found myself standing inside an outpost in Williamsburg, Brooklyn this past weekend.

Fortunately, the clothing has stayed the same and the rich take on everyday apparel is a refreshing break from the usual comfort pieces consumers reach for.

A vast range of jeans are displayed on specially-fashioned denim partitions. The fits run the gamut: painted-on skinnies with an ’80s vibe, a modern take on the straight-leg style and a beaten-on boyfriend cut slit with precise rips. I ventured to the other side of the display and fell for the vintage-effect denim trousers. I loved the low-slung crotch and lived-in feel. Girls can wear boys’ pants with the proper pieces (think fitted t-shirts and ballerina flats), and exude edgy, urban sex appeal.

The sweatshirts are less expensive than those offered at Stüssy, and boast a broader range of colors and designs than American Apparel.

In keeping with their focus’ new mission statement on their Web site, Benetton is adhering to fashion’s high standards all while bringing the industry’s pretentious nature down a notch. According to benetton.com, “Benetton knows that the casual look basically comes down to a sweatshirt and a pair of jeans, so we are offering them in a range wide enough to keep everyone happy.”

What two pieces of clothing could be simpler and more comfortable? Sit back, relax and look forward to a casual-chic winter.
