Freshman Dies in Automobile Accident
Shannon Newell, a Rowan freshman from Westmont, N.J. died Friday morning in a car accident on Rt. 55. Newell, a 19-year-old music education major, was driving with passenger Bridget Shannon when she allegedly became distracted by the radio and lost control of her car.
Newell was declared dead on the scene. Shannon, 18, of Burlington, Mass. was flown to Cooper Medical Center in Camden. Her injuries were not life threatening.
According to State Police, the crash occurred at 10:35 a.m. Friday on the northbound lane of Route 55, near milepost 59.5 in Harrison between exits 49 and 50
A viewing is scheduled for Newell is scheduled for Tuesday, July 7, 5-8 p.m., at the Church of the Holy Saviour, 50 Emerald Ave., Westmont, and on Wednesday, from 10-11 a.m. The funeral mass will immediately follow.
The family has requested that, In lieu of flowers, donations be made Shannon’s name to Haddon Township Performing Arts Guild (PMB #249, 413 Crystal Lake Ave, Haddon Twp., NJ 08033).

Shannon was an inspiration to all of us in the music department, and a driving force in the progress of the Rowan University Musical Theatre Company. She will be deeply missed!
