Dr. Michener Remembered
The late Dr. Tim Michener, assistant vice president for public safety and emergency management here at Rowan University, was remembered at his memorial service on Monday. The ceremony included a tribute by the Honor Guards from both the Emerald Society and the Glassboro Police Department, as well as a musical performance of “Wind Beneath My Wings” sung by Junior Class President Chanelle Wilson.
Dr, Michener, who had been at Rowan for seven years, died from bile duct cancer on April 2
“He had a vision of how he wanted his department to evolve,” said Rowan University President Donald Farish during the memorial service, “Tim loved his job, and he loved this university.”
Dr. Michener is survived by his wife of 36 years, Dr. Susan Michener, as well as his two children, Scott David and Brett Jason. During his time at Rowan, Dr. Michener was responsible for the creation of a campus K-9 team, as well as the student community policing program.
“He served as a role model,” remembered Student Trustee Liz Palmer, “not only to myself, but to all of the students of the Rowan Campus.”
In honor of his years of dedication and service to the students, faculty and administration of Rowan, the Student Government Association will be setting up a Dr. Timothy Michener memorial scholarship.
“If he were here,” said Mrs. Michener, “he would say to reach for the stars and apologize later.”
The memorial service was followed by a moment of silence, and the retirement of Dr. Michener’s call number, 28-600, by Reed Layton, Acting Senior Director of Public Safety/Director of Police.
“What can I say?” said Mrs. Michener, “We all love Tim.”
